WHAT IS A.P.E. ANYWAY?
Adventure Programs and Education (APE) is all about fun, it goes without saying. However, our larger goal is to teach the skills necessary to make good decisions for yourself, so you can enjoy the wilderness for a lifetime.
Our programs are structured with the highest regard for safety, while offering quality instruction and preservation of the environment and striving to stay number one in the jungle of customer service.

Winter Ski & Snowboard Expo
Visit the Outdoor Recreation Center this day for all your ski/snowboard needs. Representatives from many Colorado ski resorts will be on hand so you can purchase season passes, this is the first day for seasonal ski/snowboard rentals, and new winter merchandise will be stocked at our retail store including skis & snowboards. Gear Swap – bring your gear in during the week prior to the Expo & make some $$. Giveaways and so much more!

Climbing Wall Instruction:
This introductory class will cover knots, belay techniques and climbing communication. After completion, you will be certified to climb the indoor climbing walls located at the Outdoor Recreation Center & Iron Horse Gym, and be ready to move on with our rock climbing series.
Dates: Every Tuesday (Iron Horse Gym) and Thursday Evening (ODR); except holidays
Time: 1730 – 1930
(Recommended Prerequisite: Climbing Wall Orientation) Come out and join us as APE guides take you into the less traveled realm of the vertical world! Along with the skills you acquired from the Climbing Wall Orientation Class, you will be introduced to basic body movements, route selection, and safety on and around the rocks.

11 Mile Canyon Climbing Weekend
(Recommended Prerequisite: Climbing Wall Orientation) Check out this beautiful destination with some local experts. This two day, one night trip will spend time exploring the granite walls of 11 Mile Canyon. We’ll focus on traditional climbing skills, learning climbing anchors, and placing protection.

NEW! Evening in the Garden
(Recommended Prerequisite: Climbing Wall Orientation) In this new class we will be ascending the rock formations in the Garden of the Gods. While climbing during the twilight hours you will be able to see why Colorado has some of the most “Purple Mountains Majesty”. The class will meet up in Garden of the Gods. Class location may change due to weather.

New Mexico Climbing Weekend
(Recommended Prerequisite: Climbing Wall Orientation) Come discover the unique climbing area of Sugarite Canyon! This area has great single pitch climbing and beautiful scenic camping. With such a wide variety of routes this trip is perfect for everyone. Take a weekend trip with our guides and climb your fingers to the core!

Shelf Road Climbing Weekend
(Recommended Prerequisite: Climbing Wall Orientation) Join us to climb one of America’s premier sport climbing crags! With over 800 routes and ideal spring weather, this is a trip not to miss. Shelf Road offers a variety of routes for everybody. Our APE guides will ensure this weekend trip to be fun and memorable.

Mountaineering Weekend Trip: (Recommended Prerequisite: On Belay)
Learn basic mountaineering skills such as self-arrest, use of pickets and flukes, and traveling over snow with crampons and an ice axe. The goal of the course is to put these skills to the test on an ascent of a moderately steep snow or mixed route. Come enjoy the freedom of the hills!
Dates: 18th-20th April Leaving at 0630 on Friday, and returning 2000 on Sunday.
Pre Trip meeting at 1800 on 4 April
Cost: $225 – price includes all technical equipment, lodging, transportation and 2 lunches and 1 breakfast
Easter Egg Wall Crawl: Ages 5 to 12
Let your little bunnies climb the outdoor climbing wall in search of hidden eggs. This vertical egg hunt is sure to make everyone extra “hoppy!” Please pre-register by calling 526-5366 or stop by the Outdoor Recreation Complex, Bldg. 2429.

Summer Youth Adventure Camp: Ages 11 to 16
A.P.E. Wilderness Adventure Camp’s provide kids with high quality, in depth instruction in a variety of outdoor adventure activities. The weeklong series of “day trips” include activities such as mountain biking, rock climbing, inflatable kayaking and white-water rafting. This is a week the kids will never forget!
Dates: June 24-27th, July 15-18th, July29-August 1st

Halloween Trick or Treat Climb: – Ages 5 to 12
Bring the young ones out for an afternoon of climbing and candy. What could be better? Children can climb in their costumes while seeking the sweet taste of success!

Get on the Bus Ski & Snowboard Trips: New for 2013-14 ski season, we’re collaborating with the Air Force Academy to bring you more choices, more dates, and more resorts to ski-your-pants-off this winter. WATER BASED SERIES
Enjoy a fun and wild ride through Big Horn Sheep Canyon on the mighty Arkansas River. You will be a key element as your guide calls out commands and steers you through some of Colorado’s most classic rapids. No experience is necessary (individuals must be able to swim, weigh a minimum of 60 lbs., and be 8+ years old). Spots fill up quickly, so reserve your trip today!
Dates: May 31-August 10. (Friday, Saturday, or Sunday)
Cost: $50.00 per individual, $47.00 per person for groups of 5 or more.
Royal Gorge Whitewater Rafting
If you want to go big, join us on this trip. We’ll raft Big Horn Sheep Canyon, eat some lunch, than descend into the rough rapids of the Royal Gorge (individuals must be able to swim aggressively, weigh 100 pounds, and be 16+ years of age.). Spots fill up quickly, so reserve your trip today!

Cost: $90 per person, which includes lunch
Family Full Day
Want a full day on the water with the family? Whitewater rapids, swimming, splashing, and play are the emphasis on this full day excursion on the Arkansas River. No experience necessary (individuals must be able to swim, weigh a minimum of 60 lbs., and be 8+ years old)
Dates: July 19, 27 August 9th
Cost: $75 per person, includes lunch; $55 under 14 years old.
Overnight Raft Trip
Experience exhilarating whitewater and sleep under the stars in Brown’s Canyon. This section of the Arkansas River is one of the most scenic runs in Colorado. There’s nothing like whitewater, camping, having fun with friends, and getting away from it all while on the river! Create an adventure you’ll remember for a lifetime.

NEW!! White Water Rafting in the Fall
Didn’t have enough white water this summer keep going this fall. This trip will take you down the Royal Gorge and includes lunch.

Learn to Ski/Snowboard Trip:
Always wanted to learn how to ski or snowboard join us for a day up at Monarch Ski area and get a half day lesson from a professional instructor. Your lesson will be in the morning then you can work on your new skills all afternoon. Getting a lesson from a professional rather than your “buddy” will increase your learning curve, making the snowy steeps an enjoyable experience for you.
Dates: Any Trip to Monarch Ski Area

Cost: An addition of $62 for a lesson (ages 7 & up)
WATER BASED SERIES
Kayak Pool Session
If you want to kayak, this is the place to start. Learn all about the equipment, basic paddling skills and the kayak roll, all in the comfort of the heated indoor pool. Once you have these skills under your belt you will be ready for moving water. All equipment supplied!
Dates: May 1 June 6, 20, 26 July 11, 18, 24 August 1, 14 September 4, 12th
Cost: $20 (1st time), $15 (repeat)
NEW!!White Water Kayak Day Trip
(Mandatory Prerequisite Kayak Pool Session)
This program begins with the basics of kayaking that you were taught during the pool session. Now we will put that to use on the Arkansas River. While on the river you will learn how to read water and respond to the currents.
Dates: May 3 June 28 July 26 August 16th
We start out with a pool session introducing all the basic skills, then head out on a class I-II section of river, working on all of our new skills. We will campout Saturday night next to the river, have a campfire, and talk about all the fun we had on the river. Then on Sunday we will move you onto class II-III whitewater working on more intermediate skills. This day you will learn how to read and respond to the river’s current, choosing a line, Eddie turns and proactive strokes in whitewater. Sign up today to find yourself having fun on the River!

Bicycle Maintenance Class
No matter what kind of bike you have, it needs to be maintained. You’ll learn how to change tires, fix flats, adjust brakes, set the derailleur, and true wheels. We have all the tools you need, just bring your bike.
Dates: April 30, June 12, September 10th
NEW!! Park Tool School
Learn to turn a wrench and work on all aspects of your own bike! This intermediate 8-hour course takes place over 3 evening sessions, and is taken from the Park Tool School curriculum. Our experienced instructors will give you the knowledge you need to tune and maintain your mountain or road bike.
Date: July 16, 23, 30th (must attend all classes)
How to Mountain Bike
Make the transition from just riding around to mountain biking. Come join our instructors one evening after work. Learn to ride over obstacles, climb, descend, and turning in the rough stuff. This course starts easy and moves through tougher terrain.

Pikes Peak Downhill
Check out the best views around atop Pike’s Peak, than glide on your bike down the Pike’s Peak Highway with our instructors. This trip includes a van ride to the top of the mountain, and van support the whole ride down, bike rental, and instruction.
